01 UK launches £500 million sovereign AI fund to support startups
In April 2026, the UK government announced the launch of a £500 million sovereign AI fund, covering areas such as model development, AI agents, and drug discovery.
Startups included in the portfolio will gain access to UK supercomputing clusters, free visa support for international hiring, government procurement opportunities, and expert advisory from public sector specialists.
On the same day, the fund announced an investment in Callosum, a startup focused on processor orchestration software, and allocated up to 1 million GPU hours to six startups for model training and simulation.
Supported companies include Prima Mente, which is developing “biological foundation models” to tackle diseases like Alzheimer’s; Cursive, founded by former Google DeepMind employees; and Odyssey, which is building “world models” enabling AI to interact with realistic simulated environments.
02 UK to rejoin Erasmus Programme from 2027
According to UK media, six years after Brexit, the UK will rejoin the Erasmus Programme in 2027, restoring two-way educational exchange with Europe.
Originally launched in 1987, Erasmus promotes mobility and cooperation across higher education, training, youth, and sports sectors.
The UK exited the programme in December 2020, but a legal agreement signed in Brussels on April 15 confirms its return.
This move was a key commitment from last year’s UK-EU summit and signals renewed cooperation with Europe.
Reports suggest Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been pushing for closer EU ties amid geopolitical tensions.

05 Martin Lewis reacts emotionally to council tax reform
Martin Lewis said he was “emotional” following confirmation of major council tax rule changes.
The reform relates to how unpaid council tax is collected.
Previously, missing payments could lead to demands for a full year’s tax within three weeks.
Lewis criticized this as unfair.
New rules require councils to wait at least 63 days before demanding full payment, with administrative fees capped at £100.
He described the reform as a significant step forward.
